Guilty Fool

My daughter has deep brown eyes
As my proper next of kin
She’s still convinced that I am wise
So I shan’t tell her of my sin

My granddaughter’s deep brown eyes
Stare at my old sinful frame
A feared question in them lies:
“Did you try to fan the flame?”

“Did you break out of that trance?
Did you do the best you could?
If you had just one more chance
Would you do so? Would you? Would?”

My granddaughter’s daughter’s eyes
Them I wouldn’t recognize
For I haven’t seen them once
As her mum thinks I’m a dunce
